Currently, in solo queue, one can either pick three prespecified champions no matter the role, or let the AI choose. However, the AI always picks champions in a fixed order per role (e.g., Card Master is first option for mid), regardless of the players skill with that champion. It would be great (to me at least) if AI actually took champion knowledge into account when picking champions for a role. In reality, people will also pick champions that they are familiar with in solo queue. This would also add some diversity in champion picks, whilst allowing at least a proper pick for the assigned role (contrary to instalock).

You should always use three prespecified picks as it increases champion mastery, what we need is the ability to pick 2 roles etc. so your guy doesn't go Card Master jungle.
